Old Silver Spur Mine
Discover the fascinating mining history of Texas at the Old Silver Spur Mine, located approximately 12 km east of town along the Stanthorpe–Texas Road.
The story of Silver Spur began in 1890 when a farm worker discovered mineralised quartz in the area. Mining soon followed, with the site producing silver, copper, zinc, lead and gold.
During its peak in the early 1900s, Silver Spur became a busy mining settlement. The community had shops, a school, a doctor, a police station, a bakery, a butcher and other businesses. By 1911, the settlement had a population of around 500 people.
Mining gradually declined after 1915, and the once-thriving town slowly faded. Today, the remains of mining machinery, equipment and the old smelter site provide a reminder of the district's rich industrial history.
The Old Silver Spur Mine is an important part of Texas's heritage and offers an interesting glimpse into life during Queensland's early mining days.
Location: Stanthorpe–Texas Road, approximately 12 km east of Texas, Queensland.
Please note: The mine is currently managed by Silver Star Resources. There is no public access to the mine site.
